Getting Started

Before using this CD-ROM, please make sure your computer meets the minimum system requirements to run the program. To start using this CD-ROM, follow the instructions below for Windows and Macintosh.

WINDOWS

  1. Insert the CD-ROM into your CD-ROM drive.
  2. Click on the Start button on the Desktop and select Run.
  3. Type "D:" (or the letter of your CD-ROM drive). Click OK.
  4. Double-click on "start_here.html".

MACINTOSH

  1. Insert the CD-ROM into your CD-ROM drive.
  2. Double-click on the Mass Media Law CD-ROM icon.
  3. Double-click on the file named "start_here.html".

Following these instructions for Windows and Macintosh will launch your browser and you can begin using this software.

 

Microsoft Internet Explorer Installation and Setup


To run this CD-ROM, you will need a Web Browser. The CD-ROM includes the installer for Microsoft Internet Explorer 6.0, but this CD-ROM will also run on Microsoft Internet Explorer 5.x and on Netscape Navigator 4.7. If you do not have a Web Browser installed on your computer, you will need to install Microsoft Internet Explorer 6.0 from this CD-ROM.

Follow these instructions to install Microsoft Internet Explorer 6.0:

WINDOWS

  1. Click on the Start button on the Desktop and select Run.
  2. Type "D:\Installers" (or the letter of your CD-ROM drive). Click OK.
  3. Double-click on the "Internet Explorer 6" folder.
  4. Double-click on the file named "ie6setup.exe".

MACINTOSH

  1. Double-click on the Mass Media Law CD-ROM icon.
  2. Double-click on the "Installers" folder.
  3. Double-click on the "Internet Explorer" folder.
  4. Double-click on the file named "ie6en.hqx".

Following these instructions for Windows and Macintosh will launch the Setup program. Then follow the on-screen instructions.

Main Menu

The Main Menu of this CD-ROM contains ten active buttons down the left side of the screen. These buttons allow you to navigate through the different sections of the program. The Main Menu button will always take you back to the Main Menu of this CD-ROM. The other nine buttons function as follows.

Quizzes

Each chapter in the book has related multiple-choice Quizzes on this CD-ROM. Justin Brown, Assistant Professor of Telecommunication at the University of Florida, created these Quizzes.

Click the Quizzes button in the left menu to view a list of the chapter Quizzes. Click one of these links to display the Quiz.

To answer a quiz question, click on the button that you think corresponds to the correct answer. The box next to the button will display an [X] for an incorrect answer and a [:-)] for the correct answer. The feedback for your answer, as well as your score, will be displayed on the same page above the quiz questions. If your first answer is incorrect, you can try again as many times as you like. Your score is calculated as the number of correct answers divided by the total number of attempts to answer.

Learning Objectives

Each chapter in the book has related Learning Objectives on this CD-ROM. Justin Brown, Assistant Professor of Telecommunication at the University of Florida, created these Learning Objectives.

Four important case studies are included on this CD-ROM. The complete texts, analyses, essay questions, key terms, and related interactive exercises are included for these cases. Clay Calvert, Associate Professor of Communications and Law at Penn State University, prepared these Case Reading Exercises.

Click the Case Studies button in the left menu to view the links to these four case studies. Click one of these links to display the texts and exercises for each Case Study.

PowerPoint® Tutorial

This PowerPoint® Tutorial explains how to create a PowerPoint® presentation and offer design and presentation tips.

This Tutorial is included as both a version you can view from within your Web Browser and as a PowerPoint® file. If you are using Microsoft Internet Explorer and want to download the PowerPoint® file, right-click on this link and choose 'save target as' to save this file to disk.

This tool will help you identify better ways to learn. We all have our own unique way of learning new information. Using this interactive testing tool you can become aware of the ways in which your brain learns best.

To access the Learning Assessment Tool, follow the instructions below.

Study Skills Primer

Many students face obstacles to making the most of their time in college. Such students come to feel that they can't do the work required, but often their real problem is that they don't know how to do the work. The Study Skills Primer includes tips and advice that will help you take maximum advantage of all that college has to offer.

You will also find three activities to help you evaluate your time management and study habits. These activities require you to print out a worksheet. Follow the instructions provided for each exercise.
